WebPush - Push notifications without needing to visit the store or download the app
Did you know that push notifications are possible even without publishing the app in a well-known app store? And you can do this without having to install the app or go through a lengthy download process?
Yes, it’s that simple. First, a small caveat: This feature is currently available on Android smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy, Huawei, and Google devices, etc. Apple devices are not yet supported. Nevertheless, this allows you to reach approximately 80% of mobile users in German-speaking regions directly on their personal devices.
Let’s get started. Simply launch your app as a modern progressive web app using the existing URL. Here’s an example using the app from themunicipality of Aldersbachin Bavaria.
After launching the app, you’ll quickly see a prompt to enable push notifications.
All it takes is a tap and a quick confirmation, and that’s it. Even if the user doesn’t install the app permanently, it can now receive push notifications around the clock.
If you missed the prompt or want to change the push notification settings later, you can do so at any time via the submenu with the three stars in the upper right corner.
Now, whenever you publish new articles under the News module, they will be automatically pushed to these devices via push notifications, in addition to the usual app users via the Google and Apple App Stores. You don’t need to do anything else.
